Description

A beautiful divorcee. An ardent young man. And a love thwarted by a rigid
social code. Irene Dunne and John Boles, the stars of Back Street, share
another illicit romance in this film version of Edith WhartonÆs Pulitzer
Prize winner, a provocative novel that asserts women have a right to the
same freedoms men take for granted. Set in 1870s Manhattan, The Age of
Innocence follows a conventionally bred attorney who, although engaged,
falls in love with a woman who shocks the upper crust by daring to escape
a wretched marriage. The emotion inherent in the clash of personal
happiness and social convention is timeless: the story was filmed again
almost 60 years later with Daniel DayLewis and Michelle Pfeiffer in the
lead roles.

Director: William A. Wellman

Principal Cast: Irene Dunne, Richard Dix and Mary Boland

Description

Irene Dunne and Richard Dix team up in this exhilarating hybrid of musical and Western adventure set in Australia in 1874. Aspiring opera singer Hilda Bouverie (Dunne) is languishing at the home of her superrich guardian (played by the hilarious Mary Boland) when she unwittingly falls for the mysterious bandit Stingaree (Dix). Disguised as a wellknown composer and inspired by Hilda's mesmerizing voice, Stingaree gifts Hilda with one of his own compositions "Tonight is Mine" which subsequently puts her on the path to international fame. Of course, Stingaree captures Hilda's heart in the process. This boisterous film was Dunne's first showcase as a singer, and features several songs including "Stingaree Ballad," "Once You're Mine," and the ubiquitous "Tonight is Mine." Though it stands out as one of the more unusual items in director William Wellman's filmography, Stingaree was met with favorable reviews: The New York Times commented that the movie's "impossible happenings are highly entertaining." Stingaree is one of six RKO films of the 1930s previously thought "lost" but rediscovered and restored by TCM, and is now available on home video for the first time.

DVD Studio: Universal Vault Series
DVD Release Date: April 25, 2011

Director: Gregory La Cava
Principal Cast: Irene Dunne, Patric Knowles and Ralph Bellamy

Description

Irene Dunne plays a flibbetygibbet socialite who inherits a farm in Arizona. She can't seem to manage either her money or her private life, thus seeks advice from outside sources. Irene falls in love with fledgling Manhattan psychiatrist Patric Knowles, and marries him in the hope that he'll solve all her problems. Lady in a Jam was advertised as one of the most expensive comedies ever made; the studio was banking on the reputations of star Irene Dunne and director Gregory LaCava to draw crowds. But when the film failed (it shifted emotional gears a bit too often for 1942 film fans), both the lady and the gentleman found their careers in "a jam"from which Dunne recovered but LaCava didn't.

Studio Description

Joan Blondell, one of HollywoodÆs most memorable blondes, gets top billing in this protofeminist crime yarn as tough as a taxi dancerÆs heart. BlondellÆs first starring role was also a change of pace for a contract player usually cast as a chorus cutie or the male leadÆs loyal doxy. Instead she plays the title character, a Depressiondowntrodden waif who uses her brains instead of her body to rise from tyro con artist to crime boss. A terrific supporting cast û Chester Morris, Allen Jenkins. Mae Busch, Sterling Holloway û comes along for the ragstorackets ride through all the murder and doublecrossing that make crime melodrama great entertainment. This time with a womanÆs touch.

The priorities are clear for Army nurses on Bataan Peninsula in 1942. Take your quinine, malaria is rampant. Make do, supplies will not arrive. Stay strong, despite the overwhelming odds. The nation was shaken by the plight of U.S. and Filipino forces in the early days of America's World War II involvement, and Hollywood responded with three powerful 1943 films about that conflict: Bataan, So Proudly We Hail! and Cry 'Havoc,' a tale of courage and camaraderie featuring an allfemale credited cast. Margaret Sullavan portrays the overworked head nurse guiding an inexperienced staff of civilian volunteers: a burlesque queen (Joan Blondell), a waitress (Ann Sothern), a Southern belle, a socialite and more all heroes.

Draped in Adrian gowns and exuding saucy charm, Shearer makes her last silent film a fun one, portraying a tough cookie who falls among thieves even shadier than she is, cons them at their own grifts and marries what she thinks is a wealthy young son of the South. (She got the young and South parts right.) But love conquers all, and she opts for penniless wedded bliss û until her old partners in crime show up and threaten to spill the beans. But theyÆre still no match for Angel Face.

Video looks decent. A bit too bright though. Sound is clear.

This is a precode movie about 2 families who are emotionally devastated by divorce. Infedility, suicide, and family dysfunction mark the film and likely prevent it from being released after the code. All the actors give good performances, but since this was 1929, some overacting brought over from the theater does make it's way into the perfomances of the actors. But it doesn't distract from the story.

CONTEMPORARY REVIEW

Their Own Desire (1929)
May 4, 1933
An Aviation Drama.
By MORDAUNT HALL
Published: January 25, 1930

Although "Their Own Desire," a talking picture now at the Capitol, leaps from comedy into extravagant melodrama and the director cuts corners, it is a film with excellent photography and competent acting. It is a feature with both pleasing and annoying incidents, a tale that goes on for a while in a promising fashion and then becomes more than slightly absurd.

Everything is merry and bright in the beginning, with Lally Marlett acted by Norma Shearer, and her father playing polo. They are devoted to each other. Mrs. Marlett is sympathetic, but suddenly, a Mrs. Cheever bursts into the scene and without sufficient reason she ensnares Marlett.

Lally, played charmingly by Norma Shearer, is obviously a bright girl, but nevertheless her parents are able to keep her in the dark concerning a forthcoming divorce suit. One day Lally is told by her mother to go to her father's study and bid him goodbye. She does so and Marlett, who is a novelist, is discovered by his daughter embracing Mrs. Cheever.

Following the Marlett divorce and Marlett's marriage of Mrs. Cheever, the story then turns to Lally's meeting of young Cheever. For a whole day he does not know that her name is Marlett and neither is she aware that his name is Cheever. So soon as they do learn each others identity, Lally is at first impelled to keep away from this young man.

Jack Cheever is an exasperating person, who reminds one of William Haines's characters. He is a persistent pursuer of the girl he is supposed to love and one would imagine that Lally would rebuff him at their first encounter.

The tale jogs on with tiffs and misunderstandings that are topped off by a storm which turns an inland lake into a veritable ocean. The suspense is wrought in a carpenterlike fashion, with action chopped off here and sawed off there.

Lally and Jack are presumed to be drowned and possibly those who had never seen a motion picture would take this for granted and leave their seats. But it would never do for an attractive girl such as Miss Shearer to perish in any film, and so, after much fuss and hunting for the young people in an airplane, they are found on an island.

Miss Shearer's spontaneity and pleasing diction are worthy of a more plausible chronicle than that of this current film. Lewis Stone does well by the part of Marlett; he can't help being discovered in a comprising situation devised by the director. Belle Bennett is sympathetic as Mrs. Marlett, and Robert Montgomery at least reveals that he has ability in the r⌈le of the irrepressible Jack Cheever.

More Children of Divorce.
THEIR OWN DESIRE, with Norma Shearer, Belle Bennett, Lewis Stone, Robert Montgomery, Helene Millard, Cecile Cunningham, Henry Herbert, Mary Doran and June Nash, based on a story by Starita Fuller, directed by E. Mason Hopper; "GymJams," devised and staged by Chester Hale, with Nat Nazarro Jr., Bobby Walthour Jr., Hickey Brothers, Flo Mayo and others. At the Capitol Theatre.

Modern Review

Their Own Desire
Beautiful, vivacious Lally (Norma Shearer) lives a pampered and sheltered life. Brilliant at polo and quick with the verbal repartee, she is the life of every party and the apple of her father Hal's (Lewis Stone) eye. That is until the long married, restless Hal abandons Lally and breaks her mother's heart by marrying a pretty, much younger Beth Cheever (Helene Millard). Lally and her depressed mother (Belle Bennett) flee for their summer home on Lake Michigan where they try to recover from the dissolution of Harriet and Hal's 23years of marriage. While vacationing Lally falls head over heels for a handsome, charismatic Princetonian, Jack Cheever (Robert Montgomery), until she learns he is the son of her father's new bride.

A tangled melodrama with an engaging performance from Norma Shearer as its centerpiece, Their Own Desire (1929) is also notable for its action packed screenplay (by Frances Marion) that includes an apparent suicide, a climax involving Lally and Jack lost in a boat during a storm on Lake Michigan and numerous complications aimed at keeping the lovers apart.

Though hyperbolic by today's lowkey acting standards, Shearer's charisma carried this drama through its many shifts of emotion. Especially convincing is Shearer's transformation from the perky, funloving party girl, to the lovesick woman trying to distance herself from the man she loves out of loyalty to her mother.

Shearer received an Academy Award nomination for her role as Lally, and she did win the Best Actress Oscar that year, though not for Their Own Desire. Instead, Shearer who was nominated five times for Best Actress Oscars over the course of her career won her statuette for The Divorcee (1930).

As a child Shearer moved in 1920 from her native Montreal to Hollywood with her mother and sister, who would later marry director Howard Hawks. In 1927 Shearer struck her own power deal with her marriage to MGM production chief Irving Thalberg. Some claimed that this wellplaced marriage was the key to her success, since Shearer was soon able to cherry pick the best roles in the MGM repertoire. But in many ways Shearer merely represented the polished, ideal MGM star in films like Marie Antoinette (1938) and The Women (1939), demonstrating an admirable ability to shift gears and never allow herself to be typecast. And this "First Lady of the Screen" also made her fair share of bad career choices. After Thalberg's death in 1936 she turned down starring roles in Gone With the Wind (1939) and Mrs. Miniver (1942).

If Shearer was the First Lady of the thespian ranks, screenwriter Frances Marion was the First Lady of Hollywood Letters. Her script work on Their Own Desire (with dialogue provided by playwright James Forbes) was just one of the 150 scenarios, stories and adaptations she worked on over her prolific, highly profitable career.

Shearer's costar in Their Own Desire was the wellborn Robert Montgomery, the product of prestigious prep schools who ultimately had to find menial work when his wealthy father died penniless. After a successful stint in Hollywood playing the reliably handsome, happygolucky romantic lead to such screen legends as Shearer, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, and Myrna Loy, Montgomery went on to distinguish himself in other ways. He served three terms as president of the Screen Actor's Guild, earned a Bronze Star for his role in the DDay invasion and affirmed his conservative political leanings when he testified in 1947 as a friendly witness at Washington's HUAC trials, meant to root "Communists" out of Hollywood's ranks.

Montgomery made a name for himself as a director as well and in 1945 filled in for a bedridden John Ford on the set of They Were Expendable (1945). He also contributed some innovative pointofview camerawork to his adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, Lady in the Lake, 1947) with himself in the lead as detective Philip Marlowe. In 1955 Montgomery won a Tony for directing the Broadway production of "The Desperate Hours" and went on to father television actress (Bewitched) Elizabeth Montgomery.

A nun (Claudette Colbert) races against time to prove the innocence of a convicted murderess (Ann Blyth) who is being escorted to prison for a date with the gallows in Thunder on the Hill. In addition to Douglas Sirk's fastpaced direction, the film is enriched by Hans J. ABOUT THE BOXSET

After mastering the mix of comedy, suspense, and horror that helped define the golden age of British cinema, Basil Dearden (along with his producing partner Michael Relph) left the legendary Ealing Studios and struck out on his own. In the late fifties and early sixties, he created a series of gripping, groundbreaking, even controversial films that dealt with racism, homophobia, and the lingering effects of World War II, noirtinged dramas that burrowed into corners of London rarely seen onscreen. This set of elegantly crafted films brings this quintessential figure of British cinema out of the shadows.

Basil DeardenÆs bold, direct police procedural, starring Nigel Patrick as the detective in charge of the investigation, is a devastating look at the way bigotry crosses class divides, and a snapshot of the increasingly interracial culture of England in the late fifties.

Description

Based on a short story by Nicholas Nonsarrat (author of The Cruel Sea) and directed by Basil Dearden (The Blue Lamp, The League Of Gentlemen) The Ship That Died Of Shame takes place during the bleak aftermath of the second world war. A crew of navy veterens, played by screen legend Richard Attenborough, George Baker (The Dam Busters) and Bill Owen ( Last of the Summer Wine), are forced into smuggling black market goods across the English Channel to make ends meet. But it isn't long before wine and cigarettes are replaced by the more lucrative cargo of automativ weapons and counterfeit money. A crisis of conscience lies upon the horizon when one of the crew refuses to turn a blind eye after  discovering that the mysterious stranger they've been asked to smuggle into England hides a dark and harrowing secret.

Director: Basil Dearden
Principal Cast: Virginia McKenna, Bill Travers, Peter Sellers

Description

The Smallest Show on Earth is a gentle, frequently uproarious takeoff of Britain's
neighborhoodcinema industry. Reallife husband and wife Bill Travers and Virginia
McKenna star as Matt and Jean Spencer, a middleclass couple who inherit a decrepit movie
house in a tiny railroad whistle stop. They also inherit the theater's ancient, doddering
employees: bibulous tickettaker Percy Quill (Peter Sellers), former silentmovie
accompanist Mrs. Fazackalee (Margaret Rutherford) and doorman/janitor old Tom (Bernard
Miles). Making the best of things, the Spencers set up shop going through the usual
travails of smalltime cinema owners: substandard projection and sound reproduction, a
dismal selection of films (all they can afford is American BWesterns), and sundry
mishaps with the audience. Just when they're about to write off the theater as a loss,
crafty old Tom comes up with an underhanded but effective method to allow the Spencers to
make a huge profit on their shaky enterprise.

DVD Studio: Optimum Home Entertainment
DVD Release Date: January 10, 2011

Director: John Boulting
Principal Cast: Ian Carmichael, Richard Attenborough, Dennis Price

Description

WWII army comedy Private's Progress was one of the major British hits
of 1956. Carmichael is Stanley Windrush, a naive young soldier who
during training falls in with the streetwise Private Cox
(Attenborough). Windrush's uncle is the even more ambitiously corrupt
Colonel Tracepurcel (Price), who plans to divert the war effort to
liberate art treasures already looted by the Germans. The first half
of the film is quite pedestrian, though the pace picks up
considerably once the heist gets underway, and the cheery tone masks
a really rather dark and cynical heart. Attenborough and Price steal
the film, as well as the paintings, with typically excellent turns.
With a nod in the direction of Ealing's The Ladykillers (1955) the
film also anticipates the attitudes of both The League of Gentlemen
(1959) and Joseph Heller's novel Catch 22 (1961).

DVD Studio: Optimum Home Releasing
DVD Release Date: October 30, 2006

Director: Robert Day
Writer: Sidney Gilliat
Principal Cast: Alastair Sim, George Cole and TerryThomas

Description

The Green Man is a charming film that carries a wickedly subversive streak of black humour sqarely on the back of Alastair Simms' disgruntled criminal mastermind. Planning to assassinate a windbag MP, his dastardly plot is embroiled in a comedy of errors when George Cole's vacuum cleaning demonstration turns up a corpse in the piano at Simms' Windyridge cottage. Teaming up with the longlegged neighbour Cole tracks down the bomb to a secret hideaway for the MPa pub called the Green Man. This is the sort of masterful comedy that deftly gets away with confusing the audience who are never sure whose side they should be cheering. When Simms' carefully timed explosive device threatens to decimate a lounge bar trip of old dears, it is hilarious fun to be manipulated into hoping he can speed up their performance enough to whisk them to the safety of a gin and tonic elsewhere. This is a gem in both British comedy and the great Alastair Sim's treasury.

Russ Tamblyn stars as the teenytiny titular protagonist, while veteran musicomedy favorite Jessie Mathews and stellar character actor Bernard Miles portray Tom's normalsized parents. Journeying to the Village, Tom is pounced upon by villains Ivan (TerryThomas) and Tony (a corpulent Peter Sellers), who intend to exploit our 5 1/2inchtall hero.
